Long before I was born my mom’s sister, my aunt, died of breast cancer. She was in her early 40′s and it was during a time when breast cancer awareness was not a phrase people were familiar with like they are today. I’m nearing 40 and it’s time for my first mammogram. I never knew my aunt, but knowing the history of the disease is so close makes it so much more important to take care of my body and be vigilant about breast health.
Not only is it in our family, I knew a woman who developed breast cancer shortly after having her last child, and passed when she was a toddler. That child is now just one year younger than my oldest daughter and coincidentally, they are friends. I think of how just up until recently she grew up without her mom or a mom figure in her life and it saddens me to think that this happens to so many families!
Do you check your breasts each month? As I still menstruate regularly, my reminder comes just before my period each months. As soon as I feel the tenderness of my breast, I tend to do self-exams each month. Whether it’s on my bed or during a shower, knowing my own body gives me the power over my health and how I can relay information to my doctor if need be!
