Save 2nd Base: Support Cancer through Humor
Cancer is no laughing matter. It takes lives of people we love, yet I learned of a company that has combined it’s fight for a cure with humor to build awareness. Save 2nd Base is a breast cancer apparel company that benefits the Kelly Rooney Foundation, in memory of Kelly’s fight that took her life at the age of 43. A mother of 5, Kelly believed that laughter and love was the best medicine and coined the phrase, “Save 2nd Base,” proving that cancer doesn’t have to take one’s sense of humor.

The t-shirts and accessories are available for men, women, are baseball themed, and I was up for reviewing one because we are sports fans, and we just started out little league season. Many of the items in the store show the infamous catchprase and include a cancer ribbon familiar to many. The tee I received is definitely in the ‘humor’ category of the clothing line, and once you put one on a conversation is bound to start after a few double-take glances.
My take: I wore the tee first at home and around my family. My kids looked at me with eyes wide at the placement of the baseballs, as did my husband, he was the only one to get the “joke.” Before they said anything, I talked to them about the foundation and showed them the back of the shirt which includes the cancer ribbon and the website. A girlfriend, and fellow baseball-mom saw the tee and before chuckling, she said, “I love it!” I then did my dance to show the back and then the sigh came and she added, “I love it even more now!” I will be wearing this tee to the next ball game and attention will be brought to the girls, but I’m more than happy to talk about the meaning behind it to anyone who’s brave enough to ask. For Kelly, it’s “pink with a wink” and I’m happy to share the power of her life through her amazing idea!
The Kelly t-shirt sells for $25. If you’re into camouflage and perhaps your husband is a hunter, here’s another head-turner ($23) including the pink ribbon displayed on the front:
