Natura Sleep Envelope (Wool Comforter & Matress Protector)

Parents of kids with allergies know just how many things kids can be allergic to – pets, lotions, trees, grasses, and certain foods. But what you may not realize is how bedding can contribute to (and increase) allergic reactions. During the late spring and early fall, something in the environment bothers my son and he’s put on prescription medication (both pills and eye drops) to lessen his allergy symptoms, that often keep him from having a good night’s rest.  Bedding made from synthetics contain agri-chemicals, pesticides and, yes, and even perfumes. What’s more, synthetic bedding traps moisture and makes your child’s bed a breeding ground for dust mites, bed bugs and other nasty creatures that jeopardize a healthy night’s sleep. can offer children a way to reduce – and even eliminate – allergic reactions. Their allergy-free bedding is made with certified organic materials that are guaranteed free from chemicals during the growing and manufacturing processes and earth-friendly, expertly-designed bedding minimizes allergic reactions and over-delivers on comfort.

We were sent a Sleep Envelope to try for my son. Scientific studies show that children who sleep on wool significantly reduce tossing and turning, enjoy a deeper sleep, steadier heart rate and an overall improved quality of sleep. The Sleep Envelope features a Washable Wool Comforter ($271) and NaturaProtect Mattress Protector ($157) made with virgin wool and encased in 100% buttery soft cotton.

The mattress protector is a waterproof barrier between child and his/her mattress (without the crunchy feel of plastic). It’s treated with Natural Silver to eliminate bed bugs, dust mites and other allergens on contact.  A wool core sandwiched between the waterproof barrier and cotton top buffers pressure points and wicks away moisture so your child’s bedding remains fresh and dry.

Filled with 100% pure virgin wool and covered in soft, unbleached cotton, the washable wool comforter is feels as comforting as a hug all night long. The wool inside the comforter is like a mini air conditioning unit, taking moisture from your child’s bed and releasing it to the environment. It never feels wet to the touch, which means your child enjoys a naturally temperature-regulated sleep environment – every night.  My son normally sleeps with the ceiling fan on all night, and often that stirs up more dust and he wakes up stuffed up.  Having his bedding not making him sweaty or too warm, especially during these summer months is key.

Our take:  Overall, I’m really happy with the sleep envelope from Natura.  My son has developed a few colds this summer and with his allergies they get compacted, especially at night.  In the few weeks we’ve had the comforter and mattress pad on his bed, I noticed the length of time for his cold was dramatically reduced, he slept more sound and was not aggrevated by congestion as usual.  Also, due to his allergies my son snores, I’ve noticed in two weeks this has dramatically decreased, which leads to a healthier night’s sleep! Normally we’d have to give him medicated nasal spray, it’s great not to have to dose him up with so many medications if I don’t have to, rather provide him healthy bedding!  Plus, the light comforter is perfect for the summer months as it isn’t overly heavy, keeps you the right temperature.  I may add a comforter cover to keep it clean!
